Tsum Valley Trek Introduction

Among many unexplored destinations of Nepal, Tsum Valley is one. Tsum valley is a Tibetan Buddhist land which is located in the Himalayan Valley. It has one of the off-beat routes among different trekking trails in Nepal.

Tsum Valley lies in the northern Gorkha; the valley is not much influenced by modernization. It is a rural area, and this destination is not as popular as Nepal’s other trekking destinations. The valley is rich in Buddhist culture and traditions. The routes that take you to Tsum valley are very scenic and beautiful. You will pass through pine, oak, rhododendron, and juniper forests.

You will see many rivers, streams, and waterfalls along the way to the valley. The valley has rich culture and traditions; you can visit many Gompas and monasteries with high cultural values. You can visit various ancient Gompas such as; Rachen Gompa, Dephyudonma Gompa, Mu Gompa, etc. Here you can also see the influence of Tibetan cultures. You will also be hiking to the Ganesh Himal Base Camp. You will pass along many terraced fields and hill villages. In the beginning days of the trek, you will be trekking in the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Our journey starts with a drive to Soti Khola; we will commence our trek to Machha Khola. You will cross many suspension bridges and climb various ridges throughout the journey. The journey is long and relaxing; it will take us 18 days to complete the entire trip. You will enjoy the warm hospitality from the locals. Tsum Valley is also famous from the point of view of pilgrims.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

After you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will see our representative waiting for you. He will drop you at the hotel where you can rest and freshen up. You can also have quick sightseeing around the nearby places. In the evening we will provide you with a welcome dinner and explain to you about our journey.
Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Drive to Soti Khola (730m/ 2896ft) via Arughat

Trip Duration: 7 to 8 hrs

We will commence our journey with a drive to Arughat. We will drive through Prithivi Highway along with a view of the Trishuli River. On the way to Arughat, you can see pictures of Mt. Manaslu, Ganesh Himal ranges, and river streams.

From Arughat, it will take us 2 hours to drive to reach Soti Khola. Overnight stay in Soti Khola.

Day 03: Trek from Soti Khola to Machha Khola (890m/ 2965ft)

Trip Duration: 6 to 7 hrs

After breakfast, we will begin our trek. You will be crossing the Soti Khola and walking through the beautiful Sal forest. We will climb through the ridge of the Budhi Gandaki River. When we cross the river, we will be able to see the view of the Annapurna Circuit.
Our route passes through the Gurung village and follows down to the riverside of Budhi Gandaki. We will slowly trek down to Nauli Khola and cross the bridge which will take us to Machha Khola. Overnight stay in Machha Khola.

Day 04: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat (1400m/ 4593ft)

Trip Duration: 7 hours

Today our destination will be Jagat. The routes are full of ups and downs; we will cross the tharo Khola and reach Khorlabesi. Our trail passes through Tato Pani, which is a natural hot spring. Then we will cross the ridge and suspension bridge.

Our path then passes along the staircases. As we arrive at Yaru Khola, we climb the staircases until we reach Thulo Bharyang. Finally, after walking for 7 hours and passing along different rivers, we will reach Jagat village, our stay for the night.

Day 05: Trek from Jagat to Lokpa (2040m/ 6692ft)

Trip Duration: 6 to 7 hrs

After finishing breakfast, we will continue our trek, climb the ridge, and cross the Suspension bridge of the Budhi Gandaki River. The path passes through Ekle Bhatti, which is the separation point between Tsum and Manaslu.
After walking for some time, you will see the welcome board to Lokpa village. Finally, after 6 to 7 hours of trek, we will reach the first village in Tsum village, Lokpa village. From here, you can have a clear view of the Manaslu range. Overnight stay in this overwhelming village.

Day 06: Trek from Lokpa to Chumling (2386m/ 7828ft)

Trip Duration: 5 to 6 hrs

Today we will be walking into the wild route that leads to Tsum valley. If the weather is clear, you can get a view of Ganesh and Boudha Himal. The road descends the Lungwa River and passes through the beautiful tropical rhododendron forest.

Finally, we will reach Chumling village after crossing the Syar Khola. The town has many monasteries like; Panago Gompa, Mani Dhungyur, and Gurwa Gompa, which you can visit in the evening. Overnight stay in Chumling village.

Day 07: Trek from Chumling village to Chhokang Paro (3031m/ 9944ft)

Trip Duration: 5 to 6 hrs

After having breakfast, we will continue our trial. Choking Paro is the opening of upper Tsum valley. We will cross the suspension bridge and get the mesmerizing view of Ganesh Himal and Boudha Himal towards the south.

We will reach Gho village after crossing the bridge from Serpu Khola. Climbing up for 2 hours from Gho village will take us to Chhokang Paro village, flat land. Overnight stay in Chhokang Paro with the view of Himalchuli and Ganesh Himal.

Day 08: Trek from Chhokang Paro to Nile (3361m/ 1102ft)

Trip Duration: 4 to 5 hrs

The destination for today is Nile village which is also the last village in the Upper Tsum Valley. On the way, you can see Piren Phu cave which was once a sacred cave in the valley. Milarepa, one of the famous Tibetan saints, meditated in this cave as to the locals. Walking further, you will see landscapes and green meadows.

You will also see the ancient monasteries here and the long prayer flags of Buddhist religions. You will reach the Nile after crossing the suspension bridge over Shiar Khola. Overnight stay in the Nile.

Day 09: Trek from the Nile to Mu Gompa (3700m/ 12139ft)

Trip Duration: 3 to 4 hrs

The day begins with the trek to Mu Gompa. Mu Gompa is located at the highest point of Tsum Valley. The route passes through yak pastures.

A short 3 to 4 hours the trek takes us to Mu Gompas, one of the region’s largest monasteries. It has the life-size statue of Avlokiteshwara. From the monastery, you can have a beautiful view of the mountains. Dephyudonma monastery is also one of the historical and oldest monasteries in the valley.

Overnight stay in a lodge in Mu Gompa.

Day 10: Trek from Mu Gompa to Rachen Gompa (3240m/ 10629ft)

Trip Duration: 4 hrs

We will continue our trail and head towards Rachen Gompa. It lies in the mountains, which are the border between Nepal and Tibet. Our trail goes downhill to Phurba; our route passes from the riverbed of Siyar Khola.

Walking further, we will reach Rachen Gompa, one of the largest nunneries in this Tsum Valley. The inside of the Gompa reflects Buddhist history. Overnight in the guest house in Rachen Gompa.

Day 11: Trek from Rachen Gompa to Gumba Lungdang (3200m/ 10498ft)

Trip Duration: 5 to 6 hrs

After finishing our breakfast, we will descend towards Chumling village. Then we will pass through a wooden bridge above the Siyar Khola. The route passes through a Tibetan herbal school. The course starts to get steeper, passing along pine and rhododendron forest; you will also see the main walls with many prayer flags hung on them.

Climbing through the silver pine forest, we will reach Lungdang. You will see the Gompa in Lungdang, where nuns do their ritual pujas. From here you can enjoy views of mountains. Overnight stay in Lungdang.

Day 12: Trek from Gumba Lungdang to Ganesh Himal Base Camp (3200m/ 10498ft)

Trip Duration: 7 to 8 hrs

Today we will head towards Ganesh Himal Base Camp. The routes are full of complimentary views of nature. The hike today will be slightly tricky compared to other days. First, we will cross two small valleys; then, we will cross the pasture and reach the river. We will cross the suspension bridge and reach the forest that takes us to Kharka.

As you pass through the pine and rhododendron forest, the path becomes steeper. Climbing for nearly 2 hours, we will reach Ganesh Himal Base Camp. On the way, we will also pass through Torogumba Glacier. For the night, we will return to Gumba Lungdung.

Day 13: Trek from Gumba Lungdang to Lokpa (2040m/ 6692ft)

Trip Duration: 6 to 7 hrs

We will have our morning breakfast and descend our trail to Lipka. We will head down to Domje crossing the Laudang Khola. Crossing the jhuluwa (swing) bridge, we will reach the river bed of Siyar Khola.

The route passes along the dense forest, which will take us to Ripche Bridge. From here, we will walk through the stairs to Bhatti Ghumlong. Climbing up the woods, we will reach Lokpa. Overnight stay in Lokpa.

Day 14: Trek from Lokpa to Jagat (1400m/ 4593ft)

Trip Duration: 6 to 7 hrs

We will continue the journey and join the Budhi Gandaki River. Viewing the beautiful mountains on the way, we will pass through the forest. We will cross the suspension bridge from Sirdibas and reach Jagat. Overnight stay in Jagat.

Day 15: Trek from Jagat to Lapu Bensi (900m/ 2952ft)

Trip Duration: 7 to 8 hrs

Today we have an easy trek to complete. We will pass through several bridges and trek down to Machha Khola. Then we will reach Nauli Khola with the help of a suspension bridge. Finally, after a few hours of trekking, we will get to the Gurung village, Lapu Bensi. Overnight stay in Lapu Bensi.

Day 16: Trek from Lapu Bensi to Aryghat Bazaar (535m/ 1755ft)

Trip Duration: 4 to 5 hrs

After having breakfast, we will take a short trek to Soti Khola, following the Budhi Gandaki River. From Soti Khola, we will take a jeep drive to Aryghat Bazaar. You will stay here for the night and can explore this small town.

Day 17: Drive back to Kathmandu

Trip Duration: 7 to 8 hours

After having breakfast, we will drive back to Kathmandu. The bus follows the same path as before. You can relax and enjoy the ride, passing by the Trishuli River and landscapes. After we arrive in Kathmandu, we will drop you at the hotel. In the evening you can go for a quick shopping in the Thamel area. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 18: Depart Kathmandu.
