Everest Marathon Trek Introduction

Everest Marathon is a marathon event that is held annually in the district of Solukhumbu in Nepal. It is done around Mount Everest during May. The starting point of the marathon is 5364m above sea level.

The marathon is a real challenge for physically fit runners. Mount Everest itself is the highest mountain above sea level globally, so the marathon is considered the most demanding and challenging race globally. This event allows racing while enjoying the panoramic views of nature.

Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon commenced in 2003, giving tribute to 2 of the mountain legends: Late Tenzin Norgay Sherpa and Late Sir Edmund Hilary. This event promotes running in Nepal. This marathon provides equal opportunity for all types of runners that may be beginners or professionals. The event usually happens on May 29 every year. The experience from this event will be delightful, and it is undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A large number of runners from all over the world visit Nepal to participate in this event.

The journey begins with a flight to Lukla. Accommodation during the trip is mainly camps and lodges.

The preparation for the race is made in the Everest Base Camp. After the race is over, the runners will be spending the night in a lodge in Namche Bazaar. The finishing line is in Namche Bazaar. You will get to see the Khumbu glacier and breathtaking view of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Mt Everest itself. The Everest Marathon Trek is a prestigious glory to your trekking diary.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m)

As soon as you arrive at TIA, our representative will be waiting for you at the airport. He will transfer you to the hotel. In the hotel, you will meet your other group members(if there are more people for the marathon )who will join the marathon event. In the evening dinner, we will be discussing your trip.

Day 02: Flight to Lukla /45minutes/(2860m) & trek to Phakding

Trek Duration: 2hrs

Early in the morning, we will leave Kathmandu. Our representative will pick you up from the hotel and drop you at the domestic terminal of TIA. From here, all the runners will be flying to Lukla. After 45 minutes of flight, you will be landing on the narrow sloping runway. From here, Once we meet our porters we will head to Phakding & stay overnight

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3400m)

Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hrs.

Leaving Phakding, we will head towards Namche Bazaar. The route passes through a pine forest and river.
We will be climbing to escape the narrow George section. Moving ahead, we will pass the Khumbu National Park and cross the suspension bridge. Continuing the walk, we will cross the river and climb down to Thame to the other side of Khumbu. Finally, we will cross another suspension bridge and walk to Namche Bazaar. This is the steepest part of the entire journey. Overnight stay in a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Day 04: Acclimatization Day in Namche

Today is the acclimatization day in Namche. Namche Bazaar is the market where all goods from across the border of Tibet are imported and exported. You can find many facilities in this area like cafes, bars, shops, etc.; all the participants can go for a short 2-hour hike to Kenjoma for a panoramic view of Mt Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Everest, and more. Here participants can also practice a little running. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

Day 05: Trek to Thyangboche (3700m)

Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hrs.

After having breakfast, we will continue walking with a stunning view of Everest, Lotse, Noptse &, etc. Today is an uphill trail with lots of scenic views. We will be joining the main northeast trail towards Thyangboche.
We will be descending to the bridge across the Imla Khola.
We will climb a long ridge to Thyangboche. You can visit monasteries in this area in the evening.

Day 06: Trek to Dingboche (4410m)

Trek duration: 4 to 5 hrs.

Continuing the trail, we will head towards Dingboche, which is at the entrance to the Khumbu Valley. We will pause in Pangboche for lunch and gradually climb to Dingboche. Overnight stay in a lodge in Dingboche.

Day 07: Acclimatization in Imja valley

Today you can hike to Imja Valley towards Chukkung. Chukkung is 2 hours away from Dingboche. From here, you will get a spectacular view of mountains and the Tibetan border. Then we will descend to Dingboche for the night.

Day 08: Trek to Lobuche(4910m)

Trek Duration: 4 hrs

After breakfast, the trail follows the Khumbu valley, and we will climb to Dugla, a small settlement. After walking for 4 hours, we will reach Lobuche. On the way, you will see the memorial for the trekkers who died on Mt. Everest. Overnight stay in Lobuche.

Day 09: Trek to Gorak Shep (5140m)

Trek Duration: 3 hrs.

We will get slightly ahead to Gorak Shep from Lobuche, nearly the starting point to Everest Base Camp. Walking from Lobuche, we can spot the Khumbu Glacier stretching down the valley. Walking down, we will reach the land of sparse grasses below Kala Pattar, called Gorak Shep. There is a yak pasture in Gorak Shep. Overnight stay in a lodge in Gorak Shep.

Day 10: Rest and race preparation day in Base Camp

Today we will be resting all day and preparing ourselves for the race. All the competitors will be energizing themselves for the marathon tomorrow. Overnight stay in Base Camp

Day 11: Race day arrive Namche

Today is the day that all the participants gathered. Everyone will have breakfast by 7 am.
The race begins at 8 am. All the racers will be running back to Namche Bazaar. Firstly, they will run across the Khumbu Glacier and get back to Gorak Shep, around 5 kilometers. This part is considered to be the most challenging part of the entire race. Then the trail heads towards Imja Valley, which is about 21 km. Since the valley is at a lower altitude, you can find more levels of oxygen here.
Then the participants have to climb from the bridge, which is 500 meters long at Phunki Tenga, towards Khunde. The finishing line of the Everest Marathon race is at Namche Bazaar. The route passes through the Hillary school. After the end of the race, all the participants will be resting for the night in Namche Bazaar.

Day 12: Trek to Lukla

Trip Duration: 6 to 7 hrs

Leaving Namche(Sherpas Kingdom), we will descend towards Lukla via Hilary Bridge. We will pass through the villages of Phaking and Chopping. After a few minutes of a walk, we will reach Chaumrikharka. From here, it will take us 45 minutes to get to Lukla. Our trek ends at Lukla. Overnight stay in Lukla.

Day 13: Fly back to Kathmandu and marathon party

Early in the morning, we will take a 45-minute flight back to Kathmandu. After we land in the valley, you will be transferred to the hotel. You can freshen up and get ready for the party. In the evening, all the participants will be joining the party to celebrate the Everest marathon. The party will be full of marathon experiences and Everest moments. Overnight stay in a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 14: Departure

Our representative will help you to reach the Tribhuvan International Airport according to your scheduled flight. If you have any further plans and treks in Nepal, we are always there to serve you. You may contact us at any moment.
